What is glandula de montgomery?

The glandula de montgomery, also known as Montgomery glands or areolar glands, are sebaceous glands that are located on or near the areola of the breast. They are named after William Montgomery, an Irish obstetrician who first described them in 1837. These glands are present in both males and females and their function is to secrete a lubricating fluid that helps to keep the nipple and areola area moisturized and healthy.

During pregnancy, the glandula de montgomery may become more prominent and secrete a yellowish fluid called colostrum, which can provide important nutrients and immune factors for a newborn baby. Additionally, some women may experience blockage or inflammation of these glands, which can result in a painful condition known as Montgomery gland abscess. However, this is a rare occurrence and is usually treatable with antibiotics or drainage.
